Bhakti (Devotion)

"Only uncommonly open, creative minds could have dreamed up Bhakti.... It's a timeless and universal message that Bhakti confirms with beauty and strength."

"Bhakti deserves to be seen around the world.
It is so much more than a dance concert.
It is a groundswell of peacemaking,
a deeply satisfying testament to the humanity of bare feet and naked voices.
It is a rich love-note to the universe."

An exploration of mystical, musical poetry
highlighting the work of two saints: Andal and Hildegard von Bingen

A unique collaborative work by choreographer Aparna Ramaswamy and composers/vocalists Ruth MacKenzie and
Nirmala Rajasekar, Bhakti illuminates the soulful poetry of two female saints: Andal of 8th century South India and
Hildegard von Bingen of 11th century Germany. Choreographed in the classical style of Bharatanatyam and set to a
haunting, evocative score that uniquely pairs Medieval and South Indian classical vocal styles,
Bhakti honors the work of two women who shared the conviction that
art is the strongest medium with which to translate emotion and spiritual expression.
Bhakti is an evening of breathtaking beauty and inspiration.

5 - 6 dancers; live music by arrangement

Bhakti premiered in February, 2003, at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
