"The combined effect of Ragamala’s musicians, dancers, and painter is mesmerizing, but the seeming effortlessness in which they produce such beauty is an illusion.” --Laura F. Gross,
Minnesota’s Entertainment Showcase Music, dance, poetry, and original murals bring to life the miniature paintings of fifteenth century India. In this evening-length performance, Ranee Ramaswamy, in collaboration with sitarist David Whetstone and visual artist William Stille, elaborates on the Indian tradition of translating music into poetry and visual images. Ms. Ramaswamy and company become the figures in the paintings, interpreting six ragas (melodies). This evocative and stunning performance is played against six full-sized, hand-painted backdrops and incorporates North Indian classical music and English-language poetry. |
A Painting in Motion premiered in April, 1992, at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
