“Few of the composers and songwriters could have imagined that their works would so vividly describe the communicative hand gestures, telling glances and punctuating foot movements that define Bharatanatyam.... By the broadness of her ideas, [Ranee] Ramaswamy shows how a classic form can be at once elastic, contemporary and thrilling.” --Rohan Preston,
Minneapolis Star Tribune In keeping with Ragamala Music and Dance Theater’s consistent efforts to build bridges between cultures, Ragamala presents Pudisu (New). In Pudisu, Artistic Director Ranee Ramaswamy highlights the choreographic talents of her company dancers as they use the classical South Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam as the foundation for their individual, innovative choreography. Aparna Ramaswamy, Tamara Nadel, Kats Fukasawa, and Ashwini Ramaswamy present diverse pieces set to music that spans the globe, from klezmer, Irish, and tango to Charles Mingus and Moby! Pudisu concludes with Ranee Ramaswamy’s moving expression of Etta James’ I’d Rather Go Blind, followed by her bold choreographic interpretation of the music of French à capella artists Zap Mama. |
Pudisu premiered in September, 2000, at the Southern Theater in Minnepaolis, Minnesota.
