Return of the Rainseed

“Return of the Rain Seed takes an innovative approach to a traditional form. While the charming story is given a lively narration by the actors, it’s the visual and auditory rhythms that seduce the viewer. Every part of the body tells a rhythmic or dynamic story--feet slapping the floor as arms and hands move through stylized gestures, the head, neck, eyes, even eyebrows engaged in their own expressive variations."

One of Ragamala's most requested performances,
Return of the Rainseed is designed specifically for families and children. Inspired by a modern folk tale from India, this is the story of Mala, a young girl who yearns to save her village from a

demon who has swallowed the rainseed. Determined to succeed, Mala convinces her Godmothers to transform her into a boy, and overcomes her culture's expectations.
Through her journey, she ultimately discovers that she can be brave and adventurous using her own skills and ingenuity.

This production uniquely combines theater with Ranee Ramaswamy's powerful rhythmic and gestural choreography, exhilarating South Indian music, English narration, and exquisite costumes.

Return of the Rainseed premiered in September of 1997 at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

5 - 6 dancers; evening-length or 55 minutes for young audiences

“Of all of the many excellent visiting artists that FAME has had in the past, The Return of the Rainseed ranks as one of the most impressive in professional performance, appropriate material for children, and educational impact.”
