Ragamala is looking for male vocalists and/or movers
to participate in Sethu (Bridge)

This groundbreaking global collaborative work will bring together
Bharatanatyam and Kecak,
the strikingly powerful vocal tradition of Bali, to create a stunning new telling
of the Indian epic Ramayana.
This spectacular collaboration between Ranee Ramaswamy and Bali-based Kecak
composer/choreographer
I Dewa Putu Berata, working in partnership with choreographer/dancer Aparna
Ramaswamy,
Carnatic (South Indian classical) composer/vocalist Nirmala Rajasekar,
and Javanese Gamelan musician Joko Sutrisno, will feature 10 Ragamala dancers
and a locally recruited 70-member Kecak chorus.
Master Kecak composer/choreographer I Dewa Putu Berata from Bali,
Indonesia,
will hold a series of workshops in order to train a chorus of 70 men (ages seventeen
and up)
to chant the cak, a traditional Balinese vocal form.
Ragamala seeks performers with a variety of stregths, for different roles in the chorus:
Initial workshops held on May 7th - 9th were a resounding success!
Close to 30 participants took part in three intensive workshops with Mr.
Dewa.
The experience was both educational and fun! We look forward to seeing eveyone
at the next rehearsal.
The chorus, led by Mr. Dewa, will perform with Ragamala
at the Walker Art Center's Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, September 11th and
12th, 2004.
As we approach
the final rehearsals,
NEWCOMERS ARE STILL WELCOME TO JOIN THE CHORUS
Intensive rehearsals will be held August 20th - September 10th,
culminating in
performances with Ragamala at the Walker Art Center's
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, September 11th and 12th, 2004.
We are open to different levels of participationin the chorus.
